Ken Ryker stars in a role originally intended for Ryan Idol. (They dropped Idol because of his prima donna attitude.) Ryker plays a closeted movie star with a hidden porno past. However, Rob Cryston steals the show as a sleazy tabloid reporter who knows that you have to give some head to get ahead in Hollywood.
Cryston burns up the screen in two sizzling scenes. First, he tops Ryker's personal assistant (Christian Fox) so he can get his hands on a copy of Ryker's secret porn tape. Later on, he bottoms for a magazine editor (Jim Bentley) after watching the tape. Cryston gives two first-rate blowjobs in these two scenes. He doesn't just suck a cock, he devours it whole.
Ryker has three action scenes, but they're all marred by the fact that he has trouble keeping an erection. Too bad his dick's not as wooden as his acting. However, it's not always obvious since he's hung like the proverbial horse. In fact, he even manages to choke a couple of his co-stars with his flaccid cock.
In his first action scene, Ryker does casting director Jake Andrews to get his first mainstream acting role. He goes down on Andrews before fucking him up the ass. (Ryker and Andrews re-team for another scene in The Other Side of Aspen IV.) He has a threeway in the bathroom at a Hollywood shindig with "rising stars" Sean Diamond and Gio Romano. And he has one additional suck-n-fuck with Christian Fox at the video's conclusion. Fox is a howling bottom in both his scenes.
Also on hand: Hank Hightower as a technician who finishes the porn scene Ken Ryker walks out on by bottoming for Vince Rockland. And Vic Hall as a tradey houseboy who fools around with gardener Chad Connors.
Gay friendly porn queens Sharon Kane and Devon Shire appear in non-sexual supporting roles--Kane as a conniving gossip maven and Shire as Ryker's beard. Also, look for Andy Warhol regular Holly Woodlawn as a party guest and an amusing bit with straight porn legend Ron Jeremy who's seen making a pass at drag queen Crystal Crawford.
The opening scene, set at the porn shoot for the movie within the movie, has Ken Ryker begging Vince Rockland to fuck his ass. But Ken leaves to go on an audition before Vince has time to do the deed. This footage was shown out of context on previews for The Matinee Idol, leaving behind a slew of frustrated Ryker fans in its wake.
Rick Allen's screenplay is way above average, but the acting falls flat. Still, shots from this video have graced dozens of Ken Ryker fan pages over the years, so I assume his devotees will be pleased with the final product, wood problems and all.
The DVD extras include previews for the Joe Gage Trilogy and trailers for Idol Country and Jeff Stryker Underground. You also get a musical slide show with hardcore action shots from the video, and a chapter index that provides easy access to your favorite part of any scene.
